President’s Address

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol.  XXII (1890), pp. 25-36.

by

The Right Hon. The Lord Clinton.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was presented at its July 1890 Barnstaple meeting. It focused primarily on Association objectives which the President synthesized as; to (a) encourage the study of Science, (b) to create a more intelligent appreciation of Art, and (c) promote a better acquaintance with Literature. If these objects are promoted, suggested the President, if fresh interests are awakened and new pleasures added to the lives of any of the Members, “we shall all have reason to look back with satisfaction to this visit of the Association to North Devon, and, to use old Tristram Risdon's words, to this " right ancient borough." The Association President for 1890 was Charles Henry Rolle Trefusis (afterwards Hepburn-Stuart-Forbes-Trefusis) Lord Clinton, twentieth baron. The Barony is one of the most ancient English titles still in existence. His obituary with his Baronial Arms is available in GENUKI. The Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
