President’s Address

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol.  IX, (1877), pp. 29-54.

by

The Rt. Rev. Alfred Earle, D.D.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Devonshire Association’s 1877 Presidential Address was read at its July Kingsbridge meeting. The in-coming President was Bishop of Marlborough from 1888 to his death, and was during his lengthy career, vicar of West Alvington, South Huish, and South Milton. He spent 15 years in Totnes as the Archdeacon. He then became a rural dean and a Canon Residentiary of Exeter Cathedral. He died at Torquay in the week following his 91st birthday. Bishop Earle was given a handsome memorial in Exeter cathedral. His extensive obituary may be accessed here. The author introduces his audience to the stories of some of our county’s Elizabethan era ‘great men’; and also to the term “Devonish” he has coined for the occasion: - meaning “having to do with Devon”. The Address, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
