The Advancement of Science: Some General Reflections
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 44, (1912) pp. 616-648.
by
Arthur R. Hunt, F.L.S., F.G.S.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s Jubilee, 25th July, 1912 Exeter meeting. The 19th century in science saw the birth of science as a profession; the term scientist was coined in 1833 by William Whewell. It soon replaced the older term of (natural) philosopher. The author focuses on Devon’s contributions to progress in the sciences and particularly lauds the exciting discoveries by William Pengelly and his colleagues at Kents Cavern in Torquay, and with the unusual geology of the Bovey Basin. Genealogists are afforded valuable insights into the Devonshire Association’s intellectual powerhouse and its several elite constituents. The paper is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
