The Raised Beach on the Thatcher Rock: Its Shells and their Teaching.

By Arthur L.Hunt, F.L.S., F.G.S.

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XX, 1888, illus. pp. 225-253.

Index prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1888 Exeter meeting. Thatcher Rock is a small island off the northern coast of Tor Bay, relatively close to Hope's Nose, Thatcher Point and Meadfoot Beach. Its raised beach has long been of geological interest and occupies a critical position in the Quaternary stratigraphy of southwest Britain. Study of the raised beach phenomenon generated a great deal of interest and research by early geologists, to which Mr. Hunt’s learned article offers substantial contribution. Its author was an authority on the formation of ripple-mark, on coast erosion, and wave-action on sea-beaches and sea-bottoms, in particular on the raised beaches and submerged forest of Torbay, as well as the submarine geology of the English Channel. The article will be of particular value to genealogists with an interest in Devon’s early geology. The paper is from a copy of a rare journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
