The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"PENDLE HILL, a limestone ridge in the parish of Whalley, county Lancaster, 3 miles N.E. of Clitheroe, and 20 S.E. of Lancaster. It attains an altitude of 1,803 feet, and is crowned on the top by Malkin Tower, from which a view is obtained as far as the Isle of Man to the W., and the hills of Yorkshire to the E. Its slopes were anciently covered with forest, but are now a bleak moorland."
