BOLNEY is a parish and scattered village, 3 miles south-west from Cuckfield, on the road to Brighton, in the Eastern Division of the county, Buttinghill hundred, Cuckfield union and county court district, Lewes rape and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is an ancient stone building, consisting of nave, chancel, and massive square tower containing a fine peal of 8 bells, and bearing traces of Saxon or very early Norman origin: the edifice has been restored, and a north aisle added, in the Early English style. The register dates from about 1630. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester. The old vicarage was destroyed by fire in 1860, and a new vicarage has been erected. The area of the parish is 3,546 acres, and the population in 1861 was 789.
