Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"ROWLEY, a parish in the Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, East Riding county York, 5 miles from Brough, 4 N.E. of South Cave, and 4 S.W. of Beverley. Cottingham is its post town. The parish, which is extensive, comprises Bentley, Risby, Hensley, and two other hamlets The tithes were commuted for land and corn rents under an Enclosure Act in 1801. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of York, value £1,300. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The parochial charities produce about £2 per annum."


"BENTLEY, a hamlet in the parish of Rowley, and wapentake of Harthill, in the East Riding of the county of York, 2 miles to the S.W. of Beverley. The Scarborough and Hull branch of the North-Eastern railway passes near it."


"HUNSLEY, a hamlet in the parish of Rowley, wapentake of Harthill, East Riding county York, 2 miles N.E. of South Cove, and 6 S.W. of Beverley. A beacon formerly stood in this place, from which circumstance a division of the wapentake of Harthill derives its name. The soil is light and chalky."
