The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Oughterard contained the following places:

"OUGHTERARD, a parish in the barony of South Salt, county Kildare, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles N.E. of Naas. It is 3 miles long, and its greatest breadth is over 2 miles. The surface is diversified, and intersected by the road from Dublin to Cork. The living, formerly a rectory in the diocese of Kildare, does not now appear to exist as a separate benefice. The church, supposed to have been built in 1609, is now a ruin. The Ponsonby family had a vault in the crypt. An ancient chantry formerly occupied the site of the church. A round tower is seen in the vicinity."
