The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Rathernan contained the following places:

"RATHERNAN, a parish in the barony of Connell, county Kildare, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5½ miles N.E. of Kildare. Naas is its post town. The parish is entirely surrounded by the Bog of Allen. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Kildare, value with Kilmeague, £344, in the patronage of the bishop. It is united to Allen and Miltown in the Roman Catholic arrangement. Ruins of the old church and of Ballyteigne Castle are remaining. Limestone is the prevailing formation of rock.
