The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Balleen contained the following places:

"BALLEEN, a parish in the barony of Galmoy, in the county of Kilkenny, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles to the N. W. of Freshford. The living is a vicarage united with the rectory and prebendary of Aghoure, or Freshford, in the diocese of Ossory, Ferns, and Leighlin. The Butlers had a fortress in this parish, of which the picturesque ruins still remain. From an inscription traceable on them, the castle appears to have been built in 1455."
