The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Rathdowney contained the following places:

"RATHDOWNEY, a parish, post and market town in the barony of Clandonagh, Queen's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 72 miles S.W. of Dublin, and 3 from Roscrea railway station. The parish, which is of large extent, comprises a small tract of bog, but the land is in general good. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ossory, value £763, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, in the later English style, was erected in 1815, partly by the late Board of First Fruits. There are likewise a Roman Catholic chapel, a parochial and a National school. There are numerous seats in the neighbourhood. The town is situated on the road from Mountrath to Thurles. Its trade is entirely local. It contains a poorhouse, and a police station. Petty sessions are held once a month. Fairs are held on 27th January, 1st April, 6th May, 10th July, 12th September, 1st November, 15th December."
