The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Robertstown contained the following places:

"ROBERTSTOWN, (or Castle-robert), a parish in the barony of Shanid, county Limerick, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles W. of Askeaton. Youghal is its post town. The surface, which consists generally of first-rate soil, stretches along by the river Shannon, and is traversed by the road from Limerick to Askeaton. Foyn's Island is included within the limits of the parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Limerick, value with Dunmoylan, £141. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to that of Shanagolden. There are three day schools. Old Abbey, Fort Anne, and Congreiff are the principal seats. In this parish are the ruins of an abbey, and those of Dysart Castle are not far distant. Ancient earthworks are traced.

"FOYNES, an island in the parish of Robertstown and barony of Shanid, county Limerick, Ireland, 3 miles N. of Shanagolden, and is surrounded by the Shannon. Mount Trenchard, the seat of Lord Monteagle, is the principal residence."
