The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilcommon contained the following places:

"KILCOMMON, a parish in the barony of Erris, county Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, containing Belmullet, its post town. It is 30 miles long by 16 broad, and includes part of Lough Curramore. The surface, which is hilly and much diversified in contour, is watered by the river Owenmore. The principal summits are, Knockaduff, Signaltower, Knocknalower, Slievetyagh, Glencastle, Knocknascollop, Knocklattercus, with some others. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Killala, value £264, in the patronage of the bishop. Divine service is performed at Belmullet Court House. There are 4 Roman Catholic chapels and 14 day schools."

"ANNAGH ISLAND, in the parish of Kilcommon, barony of Erris, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland. It is situated near the entrance of Achill Sound, and consists chiefly of mountain, with excellent pasture. A salmon and herring fishery is established here."

"BALLACROY, a hamlet in the parish of Kilcommon, and barony of Erris, in the county Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 12 miles from the new line of road between Castlebar and the Mullet."

"BELMULLET, a village and seaport in the parish of Kilcommon, and barony of Erris, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 40 miles to the N.W. of Ballina. It is seated on an isthmus, between the bays of Broad Haven on the N. and Blacksod on the S., connecting the Mullet peninsula with the main-land. The in-habitants are partly employed in fishing, and partly in the corn trade. There is a convenient quay and large warehouses. Belmullet is a police station, the head of a Poor-law Union, and of a coastguard district. The principal residence is Bingham Castle. Fairs are held on the 15th of each month."

"CLAGGAN, a village in the parish of Kilcommon, in the barony of Erris, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 9 miles W. of Newport-Pratt, on Ballan Bay."
