The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ballyboy contained the following places:

"BALLYBOY, a parish in the barony of Ballyboy, in King's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 15 miles to the W. of Portarlington. It is watered by the river Silver, and contains the market town of Frankford. There is a large extent of bog in the parish. The living is a vicarage forming part of the union of Fircal (or Eglish), in the diocese of Meath. Petty sessions are held once a fortnight. Pairs are held on the 4th May and the 6th December."

"FRANKFORD, a post and market town in the parish and barony of Ballyboy, in King's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 12 miles S.W. of Tullamore, situated on the banks of the river Silver. Here is a Roman Catholic chapel, National school, police station, and dispensary, within the Birr Poor-law Union. Petty sessions are held weekly. A considerable corn trade is carried on. Odo, son of Nellan O'Molloy, founded a monastery here for White Friars, which was granted at the suppression to Robert Leycester, from whence it passed into the Magawley family. Its founder died in 1454, and was buried in front of the altar. Broghill Castle, near the town, was the ancient seat of the O'Molloys, and was taken by Lord Leonard Gray' in 1538. Tremors is the seat of Count Magawley. Saturday is market day. Fairs are held on the 28th April, 28th May, 23rd September, and 8th November."

"PALLAS, a lough in the parish of Ballyboy, King's County, Ireland, 5 miles S.W. of Tullamore. On its banks are the ruins of an ancient castle."
