The information on this page is based on recordings by Mrs Phyllis Ruby FUTTER, née YEOMANS (1910-1998). Mrs Futter had lived in an unnamed cottage in French Lane, Horsley nearly all her life and took a keen interest in village history. Her handwritten account was on display in the church until a short while ago, but has now been transcribed for us by her son-in-law Trevor OWEN.
Thomas Needham, a Bellringer, kept a diary of local events from 1838 to 1893 (see "Some Notes on Horsley Parish" by Rev G E Wigram 1928)Here are one or two extracts from the above:-
1838 Mr Frizell preached his farewell sermon in Horsley Church 1846 Mr Hullist, Schoolmaster, left Horsley 1859 Rev G Thompson and Rev S Fox preached in Horsley Church for the first time since restoration 1869 New letter box erected in Horsley 1870 Mr Jackson's balloon dropped in Wooleys bottom house close to Horsley Wakes right about 7 pm. Hundreds of people present - Jacksons ascent was at Eastwood.
