MANATON, a parish in the hundred of TEINGBRIDGE, county of DEVON, 8¼ miles (W. by N.) from Chudley, containing 403 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £13. 12. 8½, and in the patronage of the Rev. W. Carwithen. The church, dedicated to St. Winifred, has a rich screen. At Grimspound, in this parish, is an enclosure of loose stones, containing about three acres, within which are several minor enclosures; some have thought it a Druidical work; and others, with greater probability, a Stannary court.
