National Gazetteer (1868) - Appleshaw

"APPLESHAW, a parish in the hundred of Upper Andover, Andover division of the county of Southampton, 5 miles to the N.W. of Andover. It is situated on the borders of Wiltshire, not far from the Downs, a chalk ridge running through the county, and contains the hamlets of Appleshaw Bottom, Danse, and Tilley Down. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage of Amport, in the diocese of Winchester. There is a free school for six children, endowed in 1761 by Mrs. Frances Offley. Fairs are held for the sale of sheep on the 7th and 8th October, and on the Friday and Saturday before the great fair at Weyhill in November. The sales on the days before Weyhill fair are generally on a very large scale. There is also a pleasure and pig fair on the 23rd May. Appleshaw House is the principal residence. "DANSEY, a hamlet in the parishes of Amport and Appleshaw, in the county of Hants, 3 miles W. of Andover. "TILLEY DOWN, a hamlet in the parish of Appleshaw, county Hants, 4 miles N. W. of Andover."
