"BIRTLEY, a parochial chapelry in the N.E. division of Tindale ward, in the county of Northumberland, 5 miles to the S.E. of Bellingham. Hexham is its post town. Until the year 1765, Birtley formed part of the parish of Chollerton. It includes the joint township of Broomhope with Buteland. Coal and limestone are obtained here. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Durham, value £84, in the patronage of the Duke of Northumberland."

"BROOMHOPE, a township in the parish of Birtley, Tynedale ward, in the county of Northumberland, 3 miles to the E. of Bellingham. It is joined to the township of Buteland."
