The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Galloon contained the following places:

"GALLOON, a parish in the baronies of Clankelly, Coole, and Knockninny, county Fermanagh, province of Ulster, Ireland. Clones is its post town. It is situated on the E. bank of Upper Lough Erne, and contains the village of Newton Butler. The surface is flat in the vicinity of the lough, but becomes elevated as it approaches the Monaghan border. The parish limits include several islands in the lough. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Clogher, value £492, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, a large cruciform structure, was built in 1821 by the late Board of First Fruits in place of the old edifice, which was accidentally burnt in 1819. Here are two Roman Catholic chapels and two Wesleyan chapels (one Primitive). There are ten Sunday and several National schools in the parish. Crom Castle is the seat of the Earl of Erne. The Erne and Ulstercanal passes in the vicinity. The road from Dublin to Enniskillen, and a branch of the Great North-Western railway to Enniskillen, pass through the parish. Limestone and building stone are obtained here."

"NEWTOWN-BUTLER, a post and market village in the parish of Galloon, barony of Coole, county Fermanagh, province of Ulster, Ireland, 15 miles S.E. of Enniskillen, 7 from Dundalk, and 83 from Dublin. It is situated on the road from thence to Cavan, and on the line of the Irish North-Western railway, on which it is a station. It contains the parish church of Galloon, a Roman Catholic chapel, Methodist meeting-house, schools, bridewell, barracks, police station, and a dispensary, which last is within the Clones poor-law union. Quarter and petty sessions are held in the village. A pretty brisk trade is carried on in consequence of its nearness to the Ulster canal. This place gives title of baron to the earls of Lanesborough. Friday is market day. Fairs are held once a month, and on the 12th May."
