When the Saxons came to Devon - Part 2 (1920)
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 52 (1920) pp. 293-309.
by

Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was read at the Association’s July 21st, 1920 Totnes meeting. The first part of this informative paper traced the Saxon Conquest down to 710, when a substantial portion of Devon, perhaps one-fifth of its area, was in Saxon occupation. The present paper, Part II, is an eclectic smorgasbord in six sections focussing on: (a) Devon’s early inhabitants, (b) Devons ancient names; and (c) the phonology (sound-related relationships attending the name, (d) A Wessex chronology, (e) The wars of King Ine; and (f) The Charter of Athelhard.
The paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
