Name Index to
Marine Algæ of Devon
by
Edward Parfitt
Trans. Devon Assoc. Vol. XXI. (1889), pp. 338-382.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1889 Tavistock meeting. For the genealogist, the paper is a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. Seaweed is the common name for marine algae. Even though they might appear to be underwater plants, often exceeding 150 feet in length; seaweeds are not plants. Instead, marine algae belong to a group of species from the Protista kingdom. Although not plants, they share several important characteristics. Like plants, marine algae use chlorophyll for photosynthesis and have plant-like cell walls. Unlike plants, they have no root or internal vascular systems and do not produce seeds or flowers, both required for their classification as plants. (See Marine Algae: The 3 Types of Seaweed.) Specimens listed in the catalogue as an appendix to the Paper were collected in specifically identified locations throughout the length of Devon’s north and south coasts, particularly around Sidmouth and Exmouth by many of those individuals recorded in the index. The author’s obituary is available in GENUKI. The Paper, from a copy of a rare scientific journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
