Seventh Report of the Barrow Committee

by

R.N. Worth, F.G.S. etc.

Trans. Devon Assoc. 1885, Vol XVII, pp.127-131.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The report was presented at the Association’s July 1885 Seaton meeting. This particularly important working Committee was formed with the express purpose of collecting and recording facts relating to Barrows in Devonshire, initially exclusive of Dartmoor, and taking steps for their investigation. Barrows, frequently described as ‘tumuli’ on early maps of Devon, are mounds of earth, sometimes stone (the latter are generally called cairns) of various shapes and sizes that are characteristic earthwork monuments of the prehistoric periods. In this, its seventh report, the Committee presented accounts of 15 Barrow investigations. These several accounts consist mainly of further instalments of the county’s Barrow literature from sources previously unnoted.  The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
