"WORLINGTON, (WEST) a pleasant village, picturesquely seated on an acclivity on the north side of the Little Dart river, 5½ miles E. of Chulmleigh, has in its parish 218 inhabitants, and 2683 A. 3R. 26P. of land, nearly all the property of Lewis Wm. Buck, Esq., M.P., the lord of the manor, which was anciently held by the Worlingtons, and afterwards passed successively to the Crawthorne, Marwood, Affeton, and Stuckley families. . . . Near the farm house called Affton Barton are some remains of the ancient and castellated mansion, which was the seat of the Affeton family in the 13th and 14th centuries. . . . This was one of the most splendid seats in the county, and had an extensive park, with large fish ponds, woods, a warren, &c. It was built in the form of the letter E, and was last occupied by the Stuckley, or Stewkley family, . . . The Church (St. Mary,) is a very ancient structure, with a tower containing six bells, and crowned by a wooden spire. . . . The rectory . . . is in the patronage of L.W. Buck, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. W.M. Bruton, B.C.L. . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in Witheridge Hundred, the Archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and the Diocese of Exeter, 5½ miles E. of Chulmleigh. (Affeton is a lapsed medieval parish.)
