"WITHYCOMBE-RALEIGH, or Withecombe Raleigh, a pleasant scattered village, with several handsome villas, "c., from one to two miles N.E. of Exmouth, has in its parish 1882 acres of land, bounded on the west by the broad estuary of the river Exe. It had 1922 inhabitants in 1841, including 702 residing in that part of the town of Exmouth which lies in this parish, and where many new houses have been erected during the last few years. The parish has now more than 2300 inhabitants, and the soil belongs to various freeholders. . . . The manor of Withycombe-Clavill belongs to Edward Divett, Esq., and was anciently held by the Clavills by the service of finding the king two arrows stuck in an oaten cake whenever he came to hunt in Dartmoor. The manor of Broadham and Rill belongs to W.H. Hull, Esq., who has a pleasant seat here, called Marpool Hall, . . . The old parish church, commonly called St. John's in the Wilderness, was taken down on account of its inconvenient situation about 1748, except for its tower and north aisle, still used for sepultural purposes. These venerable remains are in a sequestered spot, more than a mile from Withycombe village, where a New Church (St. John the Baptist,) was built by subscription in 1720, on the site of an old chapel of ease. . . . The benefice is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of East Budleigh. . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in East Budleigh Hundred, and the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Exeter. Peskett: this parish was originally a chapelry of East Budleigh . . . St John the Evangelist is a modern church (1864) reflecting the spread of Exmouth town into this parish; All Saints, Exmouth (1897) is a chapel of ease of Withycombe Raleigh; Hulham is a village in this parish.
