Land Tax: 1767-1833
This tax was based on the value of property etc. and paid by the owner or (sometimes) occupier according to their agreement. It started in 1692 and valuations are based on those done at this date.

These Norfolk Record Office documents [with the references C/SCD 2/28/1 1767 to C/SCD 2/28/39 1832] are from the Norfolk Quarter Sessions Land Tax Assessments which are arranged by divisions this one being in Shropham Hundred.

Notes
- The Reverend William LOBB took up his post in 1769 (Patron was Hugh HARE, Esq.) according to the "List of Norfolk Benefices" by "Dawson Turner" published in 1847. Lobb was succeeded by Reverend George BEEVOR on 3rd Oct. 1803 (Patron was Thomas BEEVOR, Esq.). BEEVOR was succeeded by Reverend Robert Fountaine ELWIN on 14th July 1810 (Patron as last).
- JPs (Justices of the Peace) who passed these accounts are:-
"CD" = "Charles Dunham", "JFF" = "J F Franklin", "WG" = "William Grigson", "HH" = "Hugh Hare", "TBJ" = "Thomas Beevor Junior", "WL" = "William Lobb", "WP" = "William Pawlett", "WW" = "William Woodley", "JW" = "John Wright" - Assessors [AS] or Collectors [CO] (1826 form said they must live within parish) :- "RB" = "Richard Bowles", "RPS" = "Richard Palmer Senior".
- In other documents the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people/places:-
Barns/Barnes, Colling/Collings. - Abbreviations in the above transcription have the following meanings:-
"Exectrs" = "Executors", "Jams" = "James", "Jno" = "John", "Junr" = "Junior", "Sr" = "Sir", "Revd" = "Reverend", "Richd" = "Richard", "Thos" = "Thomas" and "Wm" = "William". - Rate was at 4s/£1 (of Valuation) for all the above years except for 1767 when it was 3s/£1.
- A John WALLAGE witnessed the marriage of a William COCKELL to Christian BROTHERS - widow at Wilby on 5/Oct/1778.
- In the "1832 Register of Electors - Western Division" the following are present as being qualified under Wilby :-
4105, Robert PECK, Wilby, Land, as occupier, Red-house farm
4106, Frederick BEATTY, clerk Wilby House and 10 acres of land, as occupier, Parsonage-house and land
4107 Richard BOWLES, Wilby, Land, as occupier - Beck Hall farm
4108 Robert Fountaine ELWIN, clerk Saint Andrews, in city of Norwich - Freehold land and tithes - Rectory of Wilby cum Hargham
4109 Joseph PALMER - Wilby - Land, as occupier - White-house farm - The following are noted from Wilby Parish Registers:-
Burials- Richard PALMER died 16/Jul/1809 aged 72 years.
- Entry 62 - Phillis PALMER was buried aged 86 years on 14/Mar/1838.
- Entry 76 - Richard BOWLES was buried aged 89 years on 24/Jul/1845.
- Entry 132 - Joseph PALMER was buried aged 89 years on 24/May/1863.
- Entry 138 - Leonard PALMER of Old Buckenham was buried aged 90 years on 8/Nov/1866.
