Jacobite Days in the West
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. XXVIII, (1896), pp. 257-271.

Prepared by Michael Steer
The article was read at the Association’s July 1896 Ashburton meeting. The Jacobite movement began with a single desire: to restore James II and VII to the throne. It was born from the fallout of what some historians refer to as the Glorious Revolution – when the Catholic James II of England (James VII of Scotland) was dethroned and forced into exile by his son-in-law, the future William III and II – and it became an underground movement in England, Ireland and Scotland. On 5 November 1688, the Dutch prince William of Orange and 14,000 troops landed at Brixham for an invasion of England. William was warmly welcomed in southwest England, gathering supporters who marched with him through Exeter towards London. The paper’s author asserts that in no contemporary history of Devon after that time, was there allusion to the Apolitical disturbances that took place during the reigns of the first two Georges. His purpose was to reveal the extent that Devon participated in this period of general unrest. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
